This fly is an off-beat combination of ideas from several well known trout fishers, including a few of John's own.

It's designed to fish vertically, with the elk-hair providing both a sight-post & an area where a Gink type floatant can be applied if necessary.

The single wing also helps support the fly whilst giving a veiled outline that's durable and flexible. The body is made from Deer Creeks Yeti wool, very like the late Richard Walkers mayfly nymph pattern. This absorbs water, so ensuring it not only looks right in the water but it helps the hook maintain its vertical position.

JOHN NEWBURY'S STINGER STONE

John Newbury's Stinger Stone is very realistic, sinks quickly, rides relatively snag-free. It lands more fish due to fewer leverage pull-outs common to long shank stone nymphs.

The brass bead below the fly ensures that it always fishes with its head upwards. The stinger hook ensures a very open gape. This holds fish better, and will move away from snags.

The mono loop allows for attachment of a dropper fly, whilst the hook remains free to flex over rocks and structure. The loop also keeps the hook from wobbling in the current.


The prominent flexible rubber legs are a real trigger point. Equally prominent gills. John is certain that stonefly gills are the important visual trigger for trout.

Catch more, & land a higher percentage of fish whilst losing fewer flies. Utterly unique amongst stone flies !
